Jared Kushner Albania resort sparks nationwide outcry

Thousands of Albanians have taken to the streets of Tirana demanding a halt to the Jared Kushner Albania resort slated for the fragile Narta Lagoon and the uninhabited island of Sazan. The affluent venture, backed by Affinity Partners, promises hotels, villas and a marina, backed by an estimated ↑ $1.6bn investment.

Environmental NGOs warn that the development threatens the Mediterranean monk seal, loggerhead turtles and critical bird colonies, including Dalmatian pelicans and flamingos. BirdLife International has labeled the area a “high‑risk habitat.”

Legal probe and political entanglements

Albania’s anti‑corruption office SPAK launched a probe this week, scrutinising 2024 legislative amendments that downgraded the lagoon’s protected status and the opaque land‑acquisition process. Prime Minister Edi Rama, a vocal supporter, told reporters, “There is no chance for this investment to stop as long as I am here.”

“From start to finish there has been a total lack of transparency,” said Aleksandr Trajce, director of PPNEA, Albania’s leading conservation group.

Protesters have turned flamingo imagery into a rallying symbol, dubbing the movement the “flamingo revolution.” Estimates put turnout at ↓ 5,000 demonstrators across multiple sites, with additional gatherings planned near the construction zone.

Ivanka Trump recently described the site as a “1,400‑hectare private island” discovered during a casual swim, emphasizing the project’s “restraint and care.” The same narrative fueled earlier controversy in Serbia, where Affinity Partners withdrew from a luxury hotel plan after corruption allegations surfaced.

International observers, including Reuters and Bloomberg, note that the episode underscores the growing clash between Western‑linked investors and Balkan environmental policy.
