Idaho farm labor immigration: Republicans split from Trump on farm workers

The debate over Idaho farm labor immigration has become a litmus test for GOP loyalty as mass deportations and heightened enforcement pushed ↓ 3 million people out of the U.S. in the first year of the second Trump administration, a shift that now threatens the nation’s food supply.

In Idaho, where agriculture supplies 20% of state GDP and dairy farms rely on a workforce that is 90% foreign‑born, a recent Boise State survey reveals a stark divergence from national party rhetoric. The poll, conducted in fall 2025 with 1,000 adults, asked whether a pathway to legal status for long‑term immigrant farm workers should be created. An overwhelming 85% answered yes, cutting across party lines: 79% of Republicans, 88% of independents and 95% of Democrats supported the measure.

“Our farms cannot operate without these workers,” said a Boise dairyman, echoing the sentiment of many rural Idahoans.

When asked if a stronger ICE presence would help the agricultural economy, ↓ 53% said it would hurt, while only ↑ 35% of Republicans believed it could help.

These findings contrast with a Reuters report that national polling shows growing disapproval of the administration’s immigration stance, even among some GOP voters.

The data also parallels shifts observed after the pandemic, when labor shortages exposed the fragility of supply chains.

Experts warn that without policy adjustments, the Idaho farm labor immigration dilemma could echo across other crop‑dependent states, from Wisconsin to Delaware.
