Hyundai Motor Group and its subsidiary Kia have rolled out an in-vehicle UV sanitization system that continuously neutralizes pathogens while occupants remain seated.

In-Vehicle UV Sanitization: How It Works

The technology, branded Plasma Care UVC, emits far‑ultraviolet C rays that break down bacterial DNA and viral RNA in real time. Unlike traditional UV lamps that require cabin vacancy, the far‑UVC spectrum is harmless to skin and eyes, allowing the system to run during every drive. Laboratory tests cited by the manufacturers claim an ↑ 99.9% reduction in common microbes such as Staphylococcus aureus and influenza viruses. A

“game‑changing safety layer for drivers and passengers,”

a senior engineer told Reuters. Production‑line integration is slated for 2025 models across both brands, beginning with premium sedans and SUVs. Analysts at Bloomberg note that the move could become a differentiator in markets where post‑pandemic hygiene expectations remain high, potentially adding a marginal premium of ↑ $200 per vehicle.
