Data centers’ energy demand strains Rust Belt manufacturers

Factory owners across the PJM Interconnection region report electricity bills climbing faster than any other sector, a trend highlighted by Reuters. Belden Brick Company, a 141‑year‑old Ohio plant, saw its monthly charge jump from $1,600 to ↓ $12,000 after a capacity‑rate hike. Steel firms echo the alarm: the Steel Manufacturers Association warns that annual power expenses have surged by tens of millions, eroding profit margins that already sit at ↓ 20‑40% of total production costs.

“Higher grid fees are an existential threat to domestic steel,” a spokesperson told Bloomberg.

The squeeze arrives as President Donald Trump touts AI‑driven data centers as a catalyst for US tech leadership, while his Made in America plan relies on a revitalized manufacturing base. Analysts argue that without coordinated policy relief—such as targeted subsidies or grid‑capacity upgrades—energy‑intensive sectors may retreat, undermining both economic and geopolitical objectives.
