Shigella vaccine insights from primate outbreak

When a ↑ 150 non‑human primates at a U.S. research facility developed severe diarrhea, most saw a crisis; scientists saw a data goldmine.

Over ↓ 2 years the infection, traced to a virulent Shigella strain, generated an unprecedented immune‑response dataset now published in Science Translational Medicine.

“The breadth of antibody targets we uncovered could redefine how we design a Shigella vaccine,” said lead author Dr. Maya Patel.

The team mapped specific bacterial surface proteins that provoked the strongest neutralising antibodies, pinpointing minute epitopes where high‑affinity antibodies docked.

By correlating those epitopes with distinct B‑cell pathways, researchers identified three candidate antigens that may accelerate human vaccine trials, a prospect especially urgent after the recent pandemic highlighted gaps in enteric disease preparedness.

External analysts, including Reuters and Bloomberg, note that the findings could shorten development timelines by months, a potential game‑changer for global health agencies.
