Great American State Fair Struggles to Fill the National Mall

President Donald Trump’s flagship celebration for the nation’s Semiquincentennial has turned into a showcase of empty lawns, as the Great American State Fair draws only scattered visitors a week after opening.

While the administration has splashed the Lincoln Memorial’s pool in “American‑flag blue” and staged a UFC bout on the White House grounds, the marquee event on the Mall remains sparsely populated, prompting a flood of social‑media sarcasm.

“Why does the ‘Great American State Fair’ look so empty? The only thing people care about is the Ferris wheel,” a TikTok video caption read.

Users on TikTok, X and Instagram posted footage of a few dozen onlookers near the Idaho booth, while a lone man lay on the grass, becoming an instant meme. One commentator quipped, “I’ve seen graveyards with more people.”

Even the fair’s own spokesperson, Joey Jones, told Reuters that “thousands are celebrating,” as B‑roll showed a near‑deserted lawn.

Attendance data obtained by AP News suggests a ↓ 30% attendance compared with the 2022 National Mall concert series, underscoring a waning public enthusiasm.

Critics on X mocked the event, noting “invisibility cloaks” and “leftist reflecting‑pool vandals.” Trump responded on Truth Social, insisting the fair was “packed with happy people” and questioning whether “OBAMA OR SLEEPY JOE BIDEN could have done it.”

Correction: An earlier dispatch misstated the fair’s opening date.
