GOP souring on Israel: Young Republicans Turn Against Netanyahu

GOP souring on Israel amid war fatigue

The latest polls show a sharp erosion of Republican enthusiasm for Israel, a trend that threatens Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s traditional U.S. backer. Young GOP voters are especially restless after Israel’s Gaza offensive and the fallout with former President Trump.

Why the shift matters

For fifteen years Netanyahu banked on Republican loyalty to offset dwindling Democratic support. If that loyalty falters, Israel faces a diplomatic vacuum.

“All the Jews are sick of you,” Trump allegedly warned Netanyahu, hinting at a possible “divorce” in U.S.-Israel ties, Reuters reported.

Trump’s own remarks ranged from calling the Israeli leader “fucking crazy” to insisting they must keep him “a little bit sane.” Vice‑President‑in‑waiting JD Vance echoed the sentiment, urging Israel not to “attack the only powerful ally left.”

Anti‑interventionist voices such as Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly and Marjorie Taylor Greene have amplified the backlash, framing U.S. aid as a betrayal of “America First.”

Polling data illustrate the drift: an April Pew survey found ↓ 57% of Republicans aged 18‑49 hold an unfavorable view of Israel, while ↓ 22% of those under 35 approve of Israel’s Gaza campaign. A Quinnipiac poll this month shows one in five Republicans believe Washington is overly supportive of Israel.

Yet the GOP establishment remains largely pro‑Israel; a February Gallup poll still recorded 70% of Republicans sympathizing more with Israelis than Palestinians, a ten‑point decline from the previous year.

The emerging schism raises a strategic question: how much of Israel’s waning standing stems from Netanyahu’s own electoral vulnerabilities versus a broader right‑wing realignment?
