Flexport chief slams remote work as white‑collar fraud

Ryan Petersen, founder and chief executive of the $8 billion logistics platform Flexport, told the Twenty Minute VC podcast that remote work is “white‑collar fraud” because home distractions, especially for parents, sabotage productivity. “I have a three‑year‑old and a five‑year‑old. The idea that I could do any work at my house is like a total fantasy,” he said.

“There’s no work getting done at that house when the children are around,” Petersen added.

He noted his own spacious home includes a private office, yet even that “doesn’t matter” when kids are present. Critics on X, including Untangle CEO Ryan Carson, condemned the remarks, emphasizing the irreplaceable value of time with family.

Pandemic boom and a reversal of policy

Flexport’s software helped giants such as Georgia‑Pacific and Gerber streamline supply chains, and an ecommerce surge pushed revenue to ↑ $3.3 billion in 2021 from ↓ $670 million pre‑pandemic, delivering its first profit. Petersen admitted the company “made the mistake during COVID of going remote and letting it stay remote for way too long,” claiming culture suffered.

Effective immediately, Flexport requires a five‑day office schedule; employees who refuse may face termination. He suggested remote work be limited to “highly skilled workers in developing nations” who can earn above local wages.

Industry leaders remain split. JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon and Elon Musk have denounced remote work as harmful to culture and fairness, while figures like Kevin O’Leary argue it expands talent pools. A Reuters survey shows 26% of workdays were remote in May 2024, far above the 7% pre‑pandemic baseline.
