small business hiring fuels May’s employment surge

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that small business hiring accounted for ↑ 92% of all hires in May, as firms with fewer than 1,000 employees absorbed the bulk of new talent.

Establishments employing 10‑49 workers led the count, followed by those with 50‑249 staff. By contrast, corporations with 5,000+ employees posted roughly ↓ 3% of openings yet delivered under ↓ 2% of hires, according to a Business Insider analysis of federal data.

“Large multinationals often appear as separate legal entities, which can skew the numbers,” an economist told Reuters.

Recent mass layoffs at giants such as Visa, Meta and Amazon—partly a correction after the pandemic hiring boom—have shifted job seekers toward nimble outfits.

AI‑driven entrepreneurship lifts small‑biz hiring prospects

CNBC reports a record 1.56 million business applications filed between November 2025 and January 2026, many citing AI tools that lower entry barriers. A Pipedrive survey found 60% of SMB owners plan to expand staff in 2026, with half earmarking larger recruitment budgets.

Yet a Polish study flags a rise in “ghost downsizing,” where vacant roles are left unfilled and workload shifts to remaining employees or AI.

Glassdoor’s 2026 Best Places to Work crowned Indianapolis‑based Crew Carwash—1,500 staff strong—over tech behemoths, hinting that smaller workplaces may offer superior culture.

Job hunters aiming for faster hiring cycles and richer workplace experiences should consider targeting startups and mid‑size firms where small business hiring continues to dominate.
