Why extracting oxygen from lunar soil matters now

The United States and China are locked in a new lunar race, but the prize has shifted from mere footprints to a self‑sustaining outpost. Extracting oxygen from lunar soil could turn regolith into breathable air and rocket propellant, turning the Moon into a refueling hub for missions to Mars. Scientists at NASA’s Artemis program cite a projected ↑ 12% increase in ISRU funding, while Beijing’s lunar ambitions confront a ↓ 5% budget adjustment.

“If we can harvest oxygen on the Moon, the economics of deep‑space travel change overnight,” said a senior engineer, speaking to Reuters.

The technology, known as in‑situ resource utilization, is being field‑tested at the Artemis Base Camp mock‑up, where robotic drills extract and electrolyze water ice. Success would let crews stay longer, reduce launch mass, and lower mission risk. The same logic drove the pandemic response: local production mitigates supply chain fragility. Meanwhile, private firms in the Bloomberg ecosystem are racing to patent compact oxygen‑extraction units, betting on a market that could be worth billions once lunar commerce takes off.
