Ebola outbreak spirals amid conflict

The Ebola outbreak, first flagged on May 5 after four health workers died in Ituri, has already claimed ↓ 223 lives, according to WHO, and may be higher today. Rapid response teams identified the Bundibugyo virus – a cousin of the Zaire strain – at a Kinshasa lab. Unlike its better‑known counterpart, Bundibugyo lacks an approved vaccine, and existing Zaire vaccines may even impair immune response, experts warn. Fatality rates hover around 50 %, and transmission follows the classic route: contact with blood, vomit or other bodily fluids, often within families, health facilities or during traditional burials. Community mistrust compounds the crisis. In recent weeks three health centers were torched after families were denied access to bodies, and gunfire erupted at Mongbwalu General Hospital when relatives demanded their dead.

“The collision of disease and conflict is catastrophic,” WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, urging a cease‑fire and community cooperation.

The outbreak’s epicenter, a bustling mining town, feeds cases into neighboring districts and threatens borders with Uganda and South Sudan – the former reporting seven confirmed infections and one death. Reuters notes that armed group activity and crumbling infrastructure cripple contact tracing and safe burial protocols. Food insecurity grips nearly 10 million people in the region, further stretching scarce health resources. Funding shortfalls, exacerbated by recent U.S. aid cuts, have left many clinics without protective gear or surveillance capacity, according to the International Rescue Committee. Emergency funds have been mobilized, but the lag hampers vaccine development, which remains months away from trials. The WHO has declared a public health emergency of international concern, urging the global community to step up support before the virus spreads beyond the volatile frontier.
