Cyclospora outbreak explodes in Michigan: lettuce and Taco Bell under fire

Michigan’s health officials are racing to contain a massive Cyclospora outbreak that has surged to unprecedented levels. As of July 14 the state logged ↑ 3,309 confirmed cases, a jump from the typical annual tally of around 50. Hospitalizations stand at ↓ 44, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Interviews with more than 1,000 patients point to contaminated lettuce and salad greens as the likely vector. The pathogen, a microscopic parasite, triggers severe watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps and nausea. While the outbreak is nationwide, Michigan’s spike eclipses all other states.

The MDHHS epidemiologists traced the cluster to several retail chains, with Taco Bell among the establishments where ill diners reported consuming salads.

“We are urging consumers to avoid raw greens until the source is identified,” a spokesperson said.

It is a coccidian parasite that infects the intestinal tract, causing prolonged gastrointestinal distress.
