Digital-Only Games Accelerate Market Shift

Sony announced that from January 2028 it will ship only digital copies of new titles, confirming a trend that has been building for years. In the United States, ↑ 55% of PlayStation 5 units sold since launch are digital‑only, up from ↓ 42% in October 2024.

“It’s a natural direction,” says Sid Shuman, senior director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, in a recent blog post.

Downloading a game is undeniably faster than hunting a disc, yet the shift erodes the traditional notion of ownership. A physical disc can change hands, sit on a shelf, or survive a storefront’s closure. By contrast, a digital licence lives at the mercy of platform terms.

Consumer Rights in a License‑Based Era

Earlier this year Sony removed 551 StudioCanal titles from users’ libraries, citing licensing agreements – a move that mirrors the broader volatility of streaming catalogs. Consumers often discover that a purchased movie or game disappears without warning.

Regulators are taking note. California’s 2025 law now forces digital storefronts to disclose when a purchase is a revocable licence rather than outright ownership. In Europe, the Commission recently pledged to draft an “end‑of‑life” code of conduct after a petition signed by 1.3 million gamers demanded protection for abandoned titles.
