Police in Nanyuki, about ↓ 120 miles from Nairobi, opened fire on demonstrators opposing a US‑backed Ebola quarantine facility. The clash left one protester dead, according to local organizer Patrick Wahome, who told Reuters the victim succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head. Witnesses say his body was discovered inside a police van, motionless, with a large cranial injury.

Ebola quarantine facility protest turns deadly

The demonstration was part of a broader backlash against U.S. plans to house American citizens potentially exposed to the virus in a sealed complex. Critics argue the move violates Kenya’s sovereignty and could spark a new wave of anti‑foreign sentiment amid lingering fears from the recent pandemic.

“We are not a testing ground for foreign experiments,” Wahome said.

International observers, including officials from the Associated Press, have called for an independent inquiry into the use of lethal force. The incident raises questions about the balance between public health security and civil liberties in a region still reeling from the effects of the global health crisis.
