Born in Kabul and raised in Southern California, Elmi watches her homeland’s gender inequality through social‑media feeds, a reality that fuels her philanthropic focus on Afghan women and children.

From pandemic launch to market dominance

While many startups shuttered in 2020, the Elmis reinvested cash, secured low‑cost leases and hired talent eager for work, positioning Cymbiotika as an “essential” brand. Their first offering – a liposomal omega‑rich gel packet – promised higher absorption than traditional pills.

Today the rip‑and‑sip packets have filled ↑ $150M in annual revenue and driven a ↑ 400% sales surge over the last three years. The company has sold enough units to fill SoFi Stadium three times, and its average order tops $100.

“Products come and go, but selling a lifestyle sticks,” Elmi told Reuters.

Retail presence now spans Target, Ulta, Sprouts and Whole Foods, with more national chains slated before year‑end.

Despite the numbers, Elmi admits the journey is riddled with setbacks. “Since 2019 we failed more than we succeeded,” she says, warning aspiring founders that failure is part of the process.

She leads a 140‑person team from the office floor, insisting on presence not out of obligation but purpose. At home, she and husband Shahab keep work out of the kids’ bedrooms, preserving a clear boundary between business and family.

Looking ahead, Elmi measures success by the number of Afghan women she can empower, not merely by EBITDA.
