Michigan’s cyclosporiasis outbreak surges as cases spike

The state health department confirmed that reported cases of cyclosporiasis have ↑ 300% in the last seven days, pushing the total past 200 confirmed infections.

Officials attribute the sudden rise to contaminated produce, likely fresh berries distributed across the Midwest. Reuters quoted Dr. Linda Hayes, who warned that without swift recalls, the pathogen could spread beyond state borders.

“We are mobilizing rapid response teams to trace the source and advise the public,” said the department’s spokesperson.

Local hospitals report a surge in patients presenting severe watery diarrhea, dehydration, and abdominal cramps. The CDC has issued an advisory, urging consumers to wash fruits thoroughly and avoid raw consumption until the investigation concludes.
