Cyclospora outbreak spreads across 41 states

Cyclospora outbreak has ignited a nationwide health scare, pushing roughly ↓ 40% of U.S. adults to avoid raw fruits and vegetables.

The Food and Drug Administration is probing six separate clusters of diarrheal illness linked to the parasite, which thrives on contaminated produce. Past incidents traced the organism to leafy greens, basil, cilantro, snow peas, green onions and raspberries.

“We are seeing an unprecedented surge in cases,” a CDC spokesperson told Reuters. “Public health guidance will evolve as investigations progress.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 11,500 confirmed and probable infections have been recorded in 41 states, with ↓ 300 patients requiring hospital care.

The most extensive cluster ties back to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms, distributed to fast‑food chains including Taco Bell. The contamination has affected nine states so far, up from five a week earlier. Michigan alone reports over 9,200 cases as of July 27.

Other five clusters remain source‑unknown, prompting heightened scrutiny of supply chains. Health officials urge consumers to wash produce thoroughly and consider cooking leafy items when possible. For ongoing updates, follow the CDC website.
