Shiga toxin-producing E. coli dispersal uncovered

Researchers at Tokyo Metropolitan University have pinpointed how the most virulent strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli propagate across surfaces. The team observed a peculiar chain‑like adherence pattern (CLAP) where a solitary bacterium anchors, elongates, and splits without detaching, forming uninterrupted filaments.

“We never saw bacteria behave this cohesively,” noted lead microbiologist Dr. Hiroshi Tanaka in a

statement to Reuters

. The phenomenon enables the pathogen to evade host defenses and colonize food‑processing equipment more efficiently.

Genomic sequencing revealed a previously unknown gene family, dubbed clpX‑like, that orchestrates the filamentous growth. Functional assays suggest the gene set boosts chain length up to ↑ 15 cells before division, a marked increase over typical E. coli replication.

Public health officials warn that the newfound mechanism could complicate detection protocols, prompting agencies like the CDC to revisit monitoring guidelines.

Correction: An earlier dispatch misstated the chain length as 10 cells; the correct figure is up to 15 cells.
