Chernobyl wolves show genetic twist

Forty years after the nuclear accident, wolves roaming the exclusion zone are displaying a surprising genetic profile. Researchers from Princeton compared blood samples from wolves inside the zone, from Belarus, and from Yellowstone. They identified ↑ 3,180 genes that behave differently, including ↑ 23 cancer‑related genes that are unusually active.

These findings suggest a possible evolutionary response to chronic radiation exposure, though scientists caution that the exact health impact on the animals remains uncertain.

“The wolves may carry variants that help them cope with DNA damage,” said evolutionary biologist Shane Campbell‑Staton to Reuters.

Population surveys from 2015 showed that predator numbers in the zone were more than seven times higher than in neighboring reserves, while prey species matched those in untouched areas, according to AP News. The isolation of the 4,200‑km² area offers a rare natural experiment on how wildlife adapts when humans withdraw and radiation persists.

Future work will partner with cancer biologists to explore whether any of the identified pathways could inform human therapies.
