Joe Goldberg has become a cultural shorthand for obsessive love turned lethal, and Caroline Kepnes’s new novel You First pulls the character back to his teenage years in post‑9/11 New York.

Joe Goldberg vs. the Manosphere

Kepnes argues the budding stalker would find the online “man‑tribe” — from looks‑maxing gurus to incel forums — utterly repellent.

“He would be horrified. He would enjoy looking down on these men,” the author tells Reuters.

The book places a seventeen‑year‑old dropout behind a bookstore counter, watching a seasoned writer from a rom‑com world manipulate him. As he learns to weaponize charm, his loneliness fuels a dangerous logic that mirrors the manosphere’s entitlement.

How pop culture shaped his pathology

Kepnes notes that the era’s “Missed Connections” ads and AOL chatrooms taught Joe that a “no” was merely a challenge. That mindset fuels the same rationalizations seen in modern toxic‑masculinity influencers.

The original You series debuted amid the #MeToo surge, a timing Kepnes says was accidental but inevitable. AP News reported the show sparked debates about romanticizing male violence.

While the series recorded a ↑ 12% spike in streaming after its fourth season, the manosphere’s follower count has ↓ 5% following major platform bans.

Ultimately, Kepnes believes Joe’s terror stems from his self‑imposed moral code. He convinces himself he is “above” the cruder misogyny that fuels the online hate‑rooms, making his brand of violence all the more chilling.
