In the race to decarbonise the supply chain that powers renewable grids, chalcopyrite – the ore feeding roughly ↑ 70% of global copper output – is emerging as a pivotal lever.

Chalcopyrite: The Hidden Gatekeeper of Copper Production

Monash University’s School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment published a Nature Geoscience study detailing why this sulfide mineral resists conventional smelting and how its internal chemistry could be reengineered for low‑carbon yields.

“Reconfiguring chalcopyrite’s crystal lattice may slash emissions by ↓ 15% without sacrificing throughput,” the authors note.

The authors argue that a breakthrough in selective leaching could accelerate production cycles, meeting the Reuters-cited surge in copper demand projected at ↑ 20% through 2035 as the world pivots to green infrastructure.

Beyond metals, the research dovetails with broader nuclear strategies to diversify low‑carbon energy sources, offering policymakers a multi‑pronged toolkit.
