Border States Push Back: Even GOP Leaders Call for End to Canada Trade Tariffs

When the U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed Friday night, the fallout hit the border states hard. In Maine, Vermont and Michigan, leaders from both parties and CEOs of the region’s biggest firms have been shouting a unified refrain: enough of the Canada trade tariffs.

Canada trade tariffs spark bipartisan backlash

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer blamed Ottawa for “last‑minute demands,” while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of “unfair, uneconomic” changes. The core dispute centers on U.S. tariff rates for heavy‑duty trucks, a point both sides claim the other moved at the eleventh hour. As of 12:01 a.m. Aug 22, a ↓ 50% tariff on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods took effect, and Canada’s retaliatory duties on steel, dairy and other sectors will hit on Sept 8.

Senators from Maine unite

Republican Sen. Susan Collins called the tariffs “a mistake” and urged both governments back to the table, noting “higher costs, risk, and uncertainty for Maine businesses.” Independent Sen. Angus King warned that a ↓ 25% lobster duty could double‑dip if President Trump adds a reciprocal charge on processed product.

“The Trump tariffs are basically taxes,” Vermont Gov. Phil Scott told reporters, emphasizing the strain on families and farms.

Michigan’s Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a vocal critic since February 2025, warned the measures threaten 1.2 million jobs and could trigger “economic paralysis.” Detroit automakers have reported Canada slashing import quotas for Stellantis by 50% and GM by 24.2%.

Analysts at Reuters note that the dispute jeopardizes a trade relationship that moves billions daily, while Bloomberg highlights the political risk for Republicans in swing districts bordering Canada.
