Artemis 2 astronauts face confrontation on Capitol Hill

During a closed‑door briefing, a self‑styled conspiracy theorist shouted “Stop lying!” at the crew, demanding proof that the Artemis 2 astronauts actually traveled toward the Moon. The exchange, captured by press photographers, was markedly calmer than the 1970s Buzz Aldrin incident, yet the tone remained confrontational.

Accusations of a staged lunar flight

The agitator claimed the mission was a Hollywood production, citing “obvious” lighting tricks and alleged “digital overlays.” NASA officials dismissed the remarks as “baseless” and reiterated that telemetry data, independently verified by Reuters, confirms the spacecraft’s trajectory.

“If you’re not seeing the moon, you’re either blind or lying,” the protester declared, waving a homemade sign.

Public confidence in the agency slipped ↓ 12% in the week following the incident, according to a Gallup poll. Nonetheless, NASA’s fiscal year budget has been approved with a modest increase ↑ 3%, reflecting continued political support for deep‑space exploration.

Analysts note that such confrontations, while sensational, rarely alter the strategic timeline of the Artemis program, which aims to land the first woman and the next man on the lunar surface by 2026.
