In a 2011 speech, Barack Obama announced a strategic pivot to Asia to counter China, promising to wind down Iraq and Afghanistan.

Fifteen years later, the United States remains entangled in a protracted Middle East conflict, siphoning troops and munitions that were slated for the Indo‑Pacific.

Why the “pivot to Asia” remains unfinished

President Donald Trump’s postponed China visit, forced by the Iran nuclear standoff, revived fears that Washington’s focus is drifting again.

“This is precisely the wrong time for the United States to turn away and be sucked into another intractable Middle East conflict,” warned Danny Russel, Asia Society Policy Institute.

Analysts argue that the diversion jeopardizes deterrence against Beijing, especially as Xi Jinping accelerates preparations to seize Taiwan.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen toured Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, hearing alarms over soaring energy costs and the pull‑back of missile‑defense units from South Korea.

“Failure is not an option,” she told Reuters, noting that the ↓ 15‑year delay erodes the U.S. military edge in the region.

Experts such as Kurt Campbell caution that even after the Iran war ends, the ↓ 5 percent drop in defense‑industry output could stall replenishment of critical stockpiles.

Meanwhile, NATO chief Mark Rutte warned that any Chinese move on Taiwan would likely trigger a “multi‑theater” clash, pulling resources from Europe to the Indo‑Pacific.

Despite the setbacks, former deputy national‑security adviser Matt Pottinger argues the U.S. must continue “sequential” pressure on Beijing, tying Tehran’s aggression to China’s ambitions.

As the United States juggles Middle Eastern firestorms and an unfinished Asian rebalancing, the strategic calculus remains in flux, with the world watching whether Washington can finally honor its long‑promised pivot.
