Breakthrough with a vagina on a chip model

Using artificial intelligence, researchers have pinpointed a novel compound, MP20, that eradicates Neisseria gonorrhoeae in a laboratory vagina on a chip system. The study, released in Science Translational Medicine, shows the AI‑driven screen sifted through millions of candidates to isolate 213 hits, ultimately narrowing to MP20 after toxicity and potency filters.

“It could actually get through all those epithelial barriers and accumulate at a concentration that was sufficient to kill the gonorrhea,” said Dr. Melis Anahtar.

Gonorrhea claims ↑ 500,000 new infections annually in the United States, with resistance to ceftriaxone climbing to ↑ 10% in parts of China. The urgency mirrors lessons from the recent pandemic that exposed global vulnerabilities in antimicrobial preparedness.

Traditional mouse models falter because the bacterium is human‑adapted; the organ‑on‑a‑chip approach sidesteps ethical concerns and offers real‑time pharmacokinetic data. After perfusing MP20 through the chip’s microfluidic channel, researchers observed bacterial clearance comparable to the gold‑standard ceftriaxone.

Experts caution that safety profiling, including liver and kidney toxicity, remains a prerequisite before clinical trials. Nonetheless, the convergence of AI, high‑throughput chemistry and microphysiological platforms signals a new era in combating drug‑resistant STIs. Reuters and AP News have highlighted the broader implications for public health policy.
