VentureBeat Pulse surveyed 107 firms (each with >100 staff) in June 2026 to map the emerging AI compute gap. While 21% already run AI at scale, 45% plan to evaluate AI‑specialized clouds within the year – a layer most do not yet use.

AI compute gap: spending outpaces insight

↑ 45% of respondents intend to add new providers, and ↓ 83% report GPU utilisation at or below 50%. More than half (64%) expect to switch or add a vendor in the next twelve months, 38% within a quarter. Integration with existing stacks (41%) and total cost of ownership (35%) dominate decision criteria, while headline token price influences only 8%.

Current deployments lean heavily on the big three hyperscalers – Google Cloud (48%), Microsoft Azure and AWS – and major model APIs such as OpenAI. Specialized “neocloud” GPU providers register near zero today. Yet the same firms rank AI‑specialized clouds as their top evaluation target, signalling a forthcoming re‑platforming wave.

Measurement lags behind investment: only 44% can rigorously track compute costs, and 49% run GPUs at ≤25% capacity. Satisfaction scores hover at 4.0/5, with value‑for‑money trailing at 3.9.

“Enterprises are buying faster than they can measure,” says a VentureBeat analyst.

Analysts warn that the next bottleneck – memory‑bandwidth limits in large‑scale inference – is barely on the radar, with 18% unaware of the shift. As the AI compute gap widens, firms risk compounding inefficiencies.
