Genes linked to personality: a million‑person breakthrough

Researchers analysing DNA and questionnaire data from more than 1 million volunteers have identified over 1,000 DNA markers that appear to shape the classic Big Five traits. The findings, published in Nature on 2 September, mark the most extensive search for genes linked to personality to date. By cross‑referencing genetic profiles with life‑style metrics, the team traced subtle patterns: people whose DNA nudged them toward extraversion were ↑ 13% more likely to contract COVID early in the pandemic, a result the authors say “makes sense” given social behaviour.

“We finally have empirical proof that personality is polygenic, not driven by a single gene,” says Michel Nivard, genomic epidemiologist at the University of Bristol.

Other traits showed geographic echoes – openness correlating with residence in cosmopolitan hubs, neuroticism clustering in affluent suburbs – drawn from the UK Biobank. The study estimates that genetics accounts for up to ↑ 13% of personality variance, reinforcing the view that environment still plays a dominant role. Reuters reported similar trends in earlier twin studies. Psychologists caution that a DNA test cannot replace a validated Big Five questionnaire, which remains the gold standard for personal insight.

Implications for mental‑health screening

While the identified markers are far from deterministic, they could eventually inform risk models for anxiety or depression, especially when combined with behavioural data. Yet experts warn against premature genetic profiling; the predictive power remains modest.
