Japan permanent residency rules tighten under Takaichi

In a decisive pivot, the administration of Prime Minister Shun’ichi Takaichi unveiled stricter criteria for Japan permanent residency, a move analysts say will deter the very talent the country needs.

Official figures reveal visa approvals fell ↓ 18% in the last fiscal year, while regional labor shortages rose ↑ 5%, especially in agriculture and caregiving.

“The policy shift is a gamble that could backfire on Japan’s demographic challenges,” warned a senior economist at Reuters.

Bloomberg reports that industry leaders are warning of potential declines in productivity and export competitiveness if the trend continues.

Rural prefectures, already grappling with aging populations, risk losing the inflow of skilled migrants who once filled critical gaps.

Critics argue the reforms echo a broader retreat from openness that began after the pandemic, when temporary work visas were curtailed.

Industry leaders urge the government to reconsider, citing potential declines in productivity and export competitiveness.
