RFK Samoa vaccine letter sparks fresh congressional scrutiny

The newly released correspondence, known as the RFK Samoa vaccine letter, shows Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. explicitly requested a study of Samoa’s measles‑mumps‑rubella (MMR) shots, contradicting his sworn testimony that the 2019 trip “had nothing to do with vaccines.”New documents obtained by The Associated Press and The Guardian reveal the letter mentions the word “vaccine” or “vaccination” eight times, raising doubts about the accuracy of his statements before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Letter content and official response

In the January 20, 2019 missive addressed to Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, Kennedy wrote, “I would propose my team conduct a detailed health informatics assessment in Samoa of what happened with your MMR vaccines,” and suggested possible manufacturing flaws as the cause of two child deaths. The Department of Health and Human Services later told AP News that the Samoa visit was “unrelated to vaccines,” a claim the agency now defends as non‑defamatory.

“I went there, nothing to do with vaccines. I went there to introduce a medical informatics system that would digitalize records in Samoa and make health delivery much more efficient,” Kennedy told Sen. Ron Wyden.

Senators Ron Wyden and Edward Markey pressed the secretary repeatedly, and he reiterated that the trip’s purpose was not vaccine‑related. Yet the letter’s eight vaccine references contradict those denials.

Political fallout and vote count

The confirmation vote closed at ↑ 52-48, with Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy’s support pivotal. Cassidy later complained that Kennedy broke promises to keep the federal vaccine advisory committee intact; within weeks the secretary dismissed all ↓ 17 members and installed his own advisers.

Legal analysts note that knowingly providing false testimony to Congress is a felony, though prosecutions are rare. Reuters has covered similar cases, underscoring the seriousness of the allegation.

The Samoa episode remains a flashpoint in Kennedy’s career, intersecting with a broader pandemic‑era debate over vaccine confidence and public‑health policy.
