Claude Tag upgrade powers proactive Slack AI

Anthropic’s Claude Tag now reads an entire Slack thread before deciding whether to intervene, a shift the company says makes the bot roughly ↑ 30% better at judging when to speak. In a Reuters interview, Scott White, head of enterprise product, described the move as the moment AI stops being a solo assistant and becomes a de‑facto chief of staff for the whole organization.

“Claude used to feel like a personal chief of staff. Now it feels like the company’s chief of staff,” White told VentureBeat.

The upgrade replaces a message‑by‑message classifier with a full‑context engine that can either reply inline, open a dedicated thread, route the issue to an existing workflow, or stay silent. In one test, two engineers tackled the same bug from opposite angles; Claude linked their insights and opened a thread that merged the theory and evidence without being prompted.

Anthropic cites three technical pillars: the Model Context Protocol (MCP) – dubbed the “USB‑C for AI” – that grants regulated data access; a new intelligence threshold that curbs noisy interruptions; and embedding the agent where collaboration already happens, namely Slack.

Security remains a priority. White noted layered defenses against prompt‑injection attacks, including classifier training and enterprise‑level compliance APIs. Permissions are always the intersection of what the user can see and what Claude can access, preventing cross‑channel leaks.

McKinsey’s latest State of AI survey shows only ↓ 39% of firms attribute earnings impact to AI, underscoring the gap Anthropic aims to close.

Pricing for the expanded context is currently “experiment‑phase” – the extra data does not yet count toward usage caps. Enterprises should expect future metering, though Anthropic offers budget caps tied to agent identities.

Against rivals like Microsoft, Google and Salesforce, Anthropic bets on cross‑system neutrality. As enterprises stitch together data from CRM, code repositories and analytics tools, a neutral orchestrator may prove more valuable than a walled‑garden solution.

The ultimate vision? Giving Claude its own OKRs so it can identify projects, assemble the right people and iterate autonomously. Until then, the bot’s most visible impact is listening to the whole room, deciding when to speak, and offloading coordination work that once fell to managers.
