Vaccination against human papillomavirus has driven a sharp fall in cervical cancer, yet HPV oropharyngeal cancer is climbing among men, especially those over 50. Recent U.S. data show a ↑ 200% surge in cases since the late 1980s, while cervical cancer incidence has dropped ↓ 50% in the same period.

HPV Oropharyngeal Cancer Trends in Men

Men now account for roughly 80% of all oropharyngeal tumors linked to the virus, according to the CDC. The rise is most pronounced in cohorts that reached sexual maturity before the 2006 introduction of Gardasil.

Why the Virus Persists

Vaccination: A Missed Opportunity for Older Men?

The vaccine is approved up to age 45, with most clinicians urging administration before age 26. For those older, the benefit hinges on personal risk assessment. As Reuters notes, newer studies suggest safety even beyond 45, though insurance coverage remains uneven.

Public health officials argue that expanding male vaccination could reverse the current trajectory, potentially mirroring the cervical‑cancer success story within a generation.
