Canada match Trump’s 50% tariffs: A looming trade standoff

In a swift counter‑move, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will match Trump’s 50% tariffs dollar for dollar, with retaliatory duties slated for September 8. U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed the original tariffs, covering roughly ↓ $20 billion of Canadian exports – from hockey sticks to cheese – will kick in on Saturday.

Negotiations that had been protracted for weeks collapsed after the United States hinted at a “deal” on Truth Social, only to introduce last‑minute clauses that Ottawa deemed “unfair and uneconomic.”

“Progress was insufficient to meet Canadian objectives,” Carney said at a midnight briefing.

The Canadian government has ordered its trade team back to Ottawa, suspending talks indefinitely. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer countered on social media, accusing Canada of “walking back commitments” and squandering a rare opportunity for partnership.

Retaliatory duties will hit U.S. sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Reuters notes that the measures affect roughly 5% of Canada’s annual shipments to the United States, but the symbolic weight could reshape North‑American commerce.

Public sentiment backs a hard line: an Angus Reid poll shows ↓ 65% of Canadians view the U.S. as a potential threat, while a Léger survey finds 56% demand no further concessions. The trade war, now moving from rhetoric to policy, threatens jobs and supply chains on both sides of the border. Bloomberg warns that escalation could reverberate through global markets.
