FDA grants first mRNA flu vaccine approval

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has officially cleared Moderna’s mFlusiva (mRNA‑1010), the first mRNA flu vaccine aimed at adults 50 + for the 2024‑25 season. Committee members voted unanimously after a late‑stage trial of >40,000 participants showed the shot cut flu incidence to ↑ 26.6% versus a standard egg‑based vaccine, and delivered ↑ 27.4% protection in those 65 and older. The trial split volunteers evenly; 970 cases of flu emerged, 2% in the mRNA arm versus 2.8% in the comparator. Side‑effects – mild pain, headache, fatigue – were transient and matched earlier safety data. A separate head‑to‑head study against the high‑dose flu vaccine for seniors indicated higher antibody titers for mFlusiva.

“Flu remains a public‑health challenge; mFlusiva offers a vital new tool for America’s seniors,” said Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel.

The vaccine directs cells to produce hemagglutinin, the surface protein that flu viruses use to invade, teaching the immune system to block infection. Because mRNA platforms can be re‑engineered in weeks, they promise a tighter match to circulating strains than the months‑long egg‑based process. The FDA granted standard approval for ages 50‑64 and accelerated approval for 65+, pending confirmatory data. Reuters and Bloomberg have tracked the regulatory shift, noting a reversal from earlier hesitancy under the previous administration.
