Michigan’s Health and Human Services Department confirmed that two residents have died after contracting the Cyclospora outbreak, marking the first fatalities linked to the parasite nationwide.

Medical records indicate the victims suffered from serious pre‑existing conditions that were aggravated by severe dehydration caused by cyclosporiasis.

Scope of the national crisis

Since late June, reported cases have surged to ↑ 11,000 across the United States, although experts suspect the true tally is higher because many infections go unreported.

“The situation remains fluid, and we are working with federal partners to identify the source,” a spokesperson said.

Authorities continue to trace the pathogen to contaminated fresh produce, with a significant number of cases tied to lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and served at major fast‑food chains.

Taylor Farms issued a recall of iceberg lettuce sourced from Mexico in mid‑July, and the chain has halted its use of the product.

Typical symptoms include profuse watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, weight loss, fatigue and nausea; treatment usually involves a short course of antibiotics, though some patients recover without medication.

Health officials advise thorough washing of all produce under running water; harder surfaces such as cucumbers or melons should be scrubbed with a clean brush.
