FIFA investment plan collapses as Infantino confronts European mutiny over World Cup future

FIFA investment plan sparks European revolt

Less than two weeks after the World Cup final, Gianni Infantino appeared triumphant beside former President Donald Trump, but the celebration quickly turned sour. Within ↓ $20 billion of proposed private‑equity funding, the plan to carve out a for‑profit arm of the sport has ignited a continent‑wide backlash.

Infantino announced the abandonment of the scheme on Saturday from FIFA headquarters, citing “division” among members. He told reporters, “We have heard the voices and the project no longer serves its original purpose.”

“The proposal threatened the very soul of the World Cup,” said a senior UEFA official, hinting at a possible boycott of all FIFA competitions.

Under the abandoned model, a subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise would have sold stakes amounting to ↑ 20% of future tournament revenues, valuing the unit at $20 billion. Lead investor Thrive Eternal, backed by Joshua Kushner, was set to take the anchor position.

European federations, together with Asian and North American bodies, condemned the move as a betrayal of the sport’s nonprofit roots. UEFA pledged to withhold participation until the plan is fully withdrawn, a stance echoed by national leagues and fan groups worldwide.

While the 200‑member federations that pledged support for Infantino’s re‑election remain on record, the loss of UEFA’s confidence raises doubts about his ability to secure the required 106 votes in the March 2027 ballot. Potential challengers such as PSG president Nasser al‑Khelaïfi and Canadian vice‑president Victor Montagliani are now being discussed.
