RuO2 Magnetism Under Strain in Ultrathin Films

A new study published in Science Advances shows that RuO2 magnetism under strain emerges when the oxide is thinned to just a few atomic layers, challenging the long‑standing view of bulk RuO2 as non‑magnetic. Researchers applied tensile strain to layers as thin as ↑ 5 nm, observing a clear ferromagnetic signal at room temperature.

“We were surprised to see such robust magnetism in a material previously thought inert,” said lead author Dr. Lina Chen.

The findings could accelerate development of spin‑based devices, where controlling electron spin with electric fields promises lower power consumption. Industry analysts note that the spintronics market may grow ↑ 20% by 2030, according to Bloomberg. Earlier reports in Reuters highlighted the strategic importance of novel quantum materials for next‑generation computing.
