World Cup investment plan sparks UEFA fury

UEFA has launched a blistering attack on FIFA, branding the World Cup investment plan as a blatant attempt to sell football to private capital. The proposal to carve out the tournament’s commercial rights into a semi‑private entity has ignited a firestorm among clubs, leagues and fans who fear profit motives will eclipse FIFA’s regulatory duties.

In a statement, UEFA chief Alessandro D’Andrea warned that the scheme could create “conflicts of interest that undermine the sport’s integrity.”

“Turning the World Cup into a financial asset for investors is a betrayal of football’s core values,” he said.

Critics point to a projected ↑ 12% revenue boost for investors, contrasted with a ↓ 5% potential dip in grassroots funding. Reuters notes that similar models in other sports have led to reduced transparency.

FIFA, for its part, argues the move will modernize the sport’s financial engine and fund development programs, a claim echoed in a recent Bloomberg analysis. Yet UEFA maintains that any dilution of its governing authority could set a dangerous precedent for future tournaments.
