Lindsey Graham’s Death Sparks Global Tributes

Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who served in the Senate since 2003, died Saturday night after a brief illness, officials said.

Emergency responders arrived at his Capitol Hill home at 8:27 p.m. for reported chest pains, according to released audio.

Political legacy and shifting alliances

Graham entered Congress in 1995, moved to the Senate in 2003 and secured ↑3 re‑elections, eyeing a fourth term in 2026 before his untimely passing.

Once a vocal critic of Donald Trump, he later became a staunch defender, backing the president’s Supreme Court nominees and the SAVE America Act, a point he discussed with Trump hours before his death.

“He was always working, a true American Patriot,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Leaders from Washington to Kyiv offered condolences. Reuters noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Graham “a true defender of freedom.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described him as “a great friend of Israel.”

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster must appoint a temporary senator, with a special primary slated for August 11 to select a permanent replacement.

Even as the nation mourned, lawmakers referenced recent challenges, recalling how the Senate grappled with the pandemic response and the ongoing debate over defense spending.

Across the aisle, Vice President J.D. Vance remembered a heated exchange over Ukraine aid, while Democrat James Clyburn praised Graham’s “mutual respect” despite partisan divides.

Former Presidents George W. Bush and Joe Biden each issued statements, highlighting Graham’s influence on foreign policy and his love for the Senate institution.
