The Moon is entering its final phase before full illumination offering exceptional surface visibility for observers worldwide. As of March 29 the lunar phase is Waxing Gibbous with 85% of the surface currently illuminated according to NASA’s Daily Moon Guide. Tonight’s viewing conditions present optimal opportunities for both amateur and professional observers. Without optical aids the Serenitatis Imbrium and Vaporum Mares are clearly visible. Binocular users can additionally identify the Mare Frigoris Archimedes Crater and Clavius Crater. Telescopic observation reveals the Caucasus Mountains Apollo 12 landing site and the Linne Crater. The next Full Moon is projected for April 1 in North America. Lunar phases follow a precise 29.5-day cycle as the Moon completes its orbit around Earth. Despite the Moon keeping the same face toward Earth sunlight illuminates varying portions creating the eight distinct phases: New Moon (invisible between Earth and sun) Waxing Crescent (small right-side sliver in Northern Hemisphere) First Quarter (right half illuminated) Waxing Gibbous (more than half lit but not full) Full Moon (entire face illuminated) Waning Gibbous (light receding from right side in Northern Hemisphere) Third Quarter (left half illuminated) and Waning Crescent (thin left-side sliver before darkness returns).
