NASA is advancing a groundbreaking nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft that could redefine deep-space exploration. Unlike the Voyager probes—which rely on radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) to convert heat from decaying plutonium-238 into electricity—this new initiative centers on nuclear electric propulsion (NEP). NEP uses a small nuclear reactor to generate electricity, which then powers highly efficient ion thrusters. The result: sustained thrust over years, enabling faster transit to the outer planets and beyond. RTGs are reliable but limited to a few hundred watts; NEP systems could deliver kilowatts of continuous power, dramatically expanding mission scope. As NASA pushes toward crewed missions to Mars and robotic probes to the Kuiper Belt, nuclear propulsion emerges as a critical enabler. This isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a paradigm shift in how humanity reaches the stars. For more on nuclear propulsion breakthroughs, see our coverage of recent nuclear advancements in aerospace. NASA officials say the technology could be flight-ready within the decade, marking the dawn of a new era in space exploration.
