Greg Abel, who took the helm of Berkshire Hathaway on Jan 1 2026, announced a bold move: the Berkshire Hathaway Taylor Morrison acquisition for $8.5 billion in cash, valuing the builder at $72.50 per share – a ↑ 24% premium to its May 29 close.

The deal translates to an equity value of roughly $6.8 billion and an enterprise value of about $8.5 billion. Closing is slated for H2 2026 pending shareholder and regulator sign‑off; Taylor Morrison will then be taken private and delisted.

Taylor Morrison, ranked No. 6 among U.S. builders with 12,997 new home closings in 2025, operates 350+ communities across 21 markets, focusing on Sun Belt growth zones and expanding its build‑to‑rent line under the Yardly brand.

Berkshire already controls Clayton Properties, the nation’s No. 12 builder, which delivered 9,953 homes last year, primarily modular units in the Southeast.

Combined, the two entities would log close to 22,950 completions in 2025, propelling Berkshire into the No. 4 spot behind D.R. Horton, Lennar and PulteGroup.

“We are excited to welcome Taylor Morrison into Berkshire’s portfolio, reflecting our long‑standing commitment to housing,” Greg Abel said in a May 31 release.

Industry observers note the timing is striking; after the pandemic housing surge, builders face higher rates and tighter margins, making scale a decisive advantage.

Analysts at Reuters and Bloomberg view Berkshire’s deep‑pocketed approach as a buffer against cyclical headwinds, allowing aggressive incentive funding and vertical integration.

Taylor Morrison CEO Sheryl Palmer added, “Berkshire’s long‑term orientation aligns with the multi‑year investment cycle of homebuilding.”
