NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman unveiled a radical shift in the agency’s lunar strategy on Tuesday, abandoning plans for the Lunar Gateway in favor of a sprawling, nuclear-powered Moon base. The decision marks a decisive pivot toward establishing a permanent human presence on the lunar surface by the end of the decade, directly challenging China’s advancing ambitions in cislunar space. During the “Ignition” event in Washington, DC, Isaacman framed the move as part of a broader “great power” contest, warning that failure to act decisively would cede the Moon to Beijing. The base, designed to support long-duration missions, will feature permanent habitats, scientific laboratories, local manufacturing capabilities, and multiple power sources—including nuclear reactors. To deliver the necessary infrastructure, NASA will partner with a broad coalition of commercial entities capable of transporting medium and large cargo to the Moon. The agency also confirmed plans for a nuclear-powered Mars mission, which will deploy three autonomous helicopters to the Red Planet’s surface. The Lunar Gateway, once envisioned as a staging hub for deep-space exploration, has been shelved to concentrate all resources on the more ambitious lunar surface initiative.
