President Donald Trump has publicly demanded the removal of Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough after she barred a $1 billion White House ballroom line from the Republican‑led budget reconciliation bill.

Elizabeth MacDonough’s Ruling Sparks Republican Outcry

MacDonough ruled that the security spend violated the Byrd Rule, a safeguard that prevents non‑budgetary measures from slipping into fast‑track legislation. The Senate can pass reconciliation measures with only ↑ 51 votes, avoiding the 60‑vote filibuster threshold, but the rule forces a tighter scope.

“Why has she not been replaced? There are many fair people who would be qualified for that vital job,” Trump told reporters.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy confirmed the ballroom money has been stripped from the draft, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune called the attack “concerning” but warned the chamber would “make sure everybody’s got security around here.” Democrats hailed the decision as a win; Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the GOP’s “ridiculous ballroom proposal” was dead. MacDonough has served as the Senate’s parliamentarian since 2012, appointed by then‑Democratic leader Harry Reid, and she has survived partisan swings under both parties. Her role, defined by Reuters, is to interpret Senate rules, precedents and practices, offering non‑binding advice that most members respect. Though the White House claims the ballroom is a “gift to the United States,” critics note the cost has ballooned to ↓ $1 billion. The episode underscores Trump’s broader push to overhaul Senate procedures, including the controversial “Save America Act” and a filibuster repeal, as he warns GOP senators to “get smart or you’ll be looking for a job soon.”
