An Earth‑based dish in West Virginia has produced a faint but unmistakable image of NASA’s Artemis II Orion capsule as it loops the Moon, placing the shot among the longest‑range photographs of humans ever taken. The Green Bank Telescope, famed for listening to distant pulsars, was repurposed to chase a moving target ↑ 200,000 miles away, rendering the crew as four bright pixels against the lunar horizon.

The picture, though blurry, confirms the capsule’s orbital trajectory and offers engineers a novel way to monitor deep‑space missions without relying on onboard cameras. “Seeing our astronauts from the ground feels like a new era of observation,” said NASA’s flight director in a briefing reported by Reuters.

“The ability to image a spacecraft at lunar distance expands our situational awareness,” the agency added.

The achievement underscores the growing synergy between radio astronomy and human spaceflight, hinting at future collaborations that could track crews on Artemis III and beyond.
