Why pump anxiety is eclipsing traditional range anxiety

Polestar chief executive Michael Lohscheller told CNN that shoppers now stare at the pump price tag more than the battery range, coining the term pump anxiety. In the first quarter, the Swedish‑Dutch EV maker posted ↑ 8.4% revenue growth, yet its cash burn widened to ↓ 15% YoY, a tension highlighted in its latest filing.

“People ask, ‘how much will I pay at the gas station?’” Lohscheller said on CNBC’s Squawk Box Europe.

Balance‑sheet reality behind the hype

The company’s net debt sits at €1.2 billion, up from €950 million a year earlier, while liquidity slumped to €300 million. Analysts at Bloomberg warn that the shift from range to pump concerns could mask deeper profitability gaps.

Investors are watching whether Polestar can convert the new anxiety into higher margin sales or if the cost‑of‑fuel volatility will erode margins further. The next earnings release, slated for August, will be a litmus test for the brand’s strategic pivot.
