Gas tax suspension meets Democratic push for windfall levy

President Trump’s bid to suspend the gas tax has run into a wall of bipartisan resistance on Capitol Hill. Democrats are rolling out a suite of measures aimed at curbing fuel costs without eroding federal revenue.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D‑Calif.) is set to introduce legislation that would slap a ↓ 100% windfall tax on any profit oil companies earn when the benchmark price exceeds ↑ $75 per barrel. The levy would stay in force for the duration of the Iran conflict or until prices dip below the threshold, with proceeds earmarked for a direct rebate to consumers.

“We cannot let war‑driven price spikes become a permanent tax on American drivers,” Sherman told reporters.

Other Democrats, including Rep. Ro Khanna, are pressing for a temporary ban on U.S. oil exports to boost domestic supply, while the broader caucus argues that ending the Iran engagement would remove the underlying price pressure.
