NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is engineering a next‑generation Mars rotorcraft that could haul substantially heavier scientific payloads across the Red Planet’s thin air.

Breakthrough Mars rotorcraft Technology

The 2021‑2024 Ingenuity helicopter proved the concept, logging ↑ 72 flights—far beyond its five‑flight target—before a controlled crash in January 2024. That record set a new benchmark for aerial exploration beyond Earth.

“We’ve moved from a proof‑of‑concept to a scalable platform,” said JPL’s chief engineer in a briefing to Reuters.

Design teams are now focusing on larger rotors, higher‑efficiency motors, and composite blades that can tolerate the Martian atmosphere’s ≈0.6% of Earth’s density. The goal: extend flight endurance from minutes to hours and increase payload capacity from ↓ 1.8 kg to upwards of 5 kg.

NASA’s upcoming SkyFall mission, slated for a late‑2028 launch, will deliver three of these advanced rotorcraft aboard the nuclear‑powered Space Reactor-1 (SR‑1) spacecraft—a technology demonstrator announced by Administrator Jared Isaacman.

If successful, the fleet could scout terrain for future sample‑return missions, map subsurface ice, and even support human outposts, turning the thin Martian air into a reliable transport network.

Further details were reported by AP News, noting that the SR‑1’s compact fission core will provide continuous power for both propulsion and onboard instruments.
