French magistrates have escalated their inquiry into X’s corporate practices, officially opening a criminal probe that could culminate in Elon Musk preliminary charges against the billionaire and CEO Linda Yaccarino.

Elon Musk preliminary charges in France

The investigation stems from allegations that X failed to disclose a material acquisition of a French startup, potentially breaching securities law. Prosecutors argue the omission misled investors on the platform’s valuation, a claim echoed by analysts at Reuters.

Sources close to the case say a ↓ €5 million penalty could be on the table, alongside possible imprisonment for falsifying documents.

“If the evidence holds, this will be a landmark enforcement action against a tech titan,” said a legal expert familiar with the dossier.

Both Musk and Yaccarino have yet to comment, but the move signals Paris’ growing willingness to police the digital economy, a stance also reported by Bloomberg.
