The Iran ceasefire that has held a fragile calm for weeks unraveled on Monday, sending oil prices soaring and Wall Street reeling. President Donald Trump announced a “Project Freedom” to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting U.S. Central Command to guide two American‑flagged ships and deploy destroyers into the Persian Gulf.

Iran ceasefire collapses, oil markets react

Within minutes, U.S. forces engaged Iranian drones and missiles, destroying seven fast‑boats while Tehran’s aerial assets struck the UAE’s Fujairah fuel hub. The UAE intercepted three loitering munitions over its waters, Reuters reported.

“If they fire on a ship, they’ll be blown off the face of the earth,” Trump warned on Fox News.

The market response was immediate: the Dow slipped ↓ 560 points (1.1%), while Brent crude leapt ↑ 6% to close above $114 a barrel and WTI topped $106. Volatility surged, with the VIX spiking again. Analysts note that Iran has demanded an end to the U.S. naval blockade before reopening the strait, a condition Washington shows no sign of meeting. Chevron’s CEO Mike Wirth told the Milken Institute that even if the waterway reopens tomorrow, full normalization could take months due to mines, stranded vessels, and insurance hesitancy. Prediction market Kalshi now assigns a 56% chance that traffic normalizes by August, down from earlier consensus. Reuters and Bloomberg highlight that New York Fed President John Williams warned Middle‑East supply shocks will keep inflation near 3% through year‑end, above the Fed’s 2% target. “We don’t anticipate a quick resolution,” said Jay Hatfield, CEO of Infrastructure Capital Advisors, adding that a forced denuclearization of Iran would further unsettle markets.
