iPhone moon video: a de facto Apple showcase

NASA’s recent release of an iPhone moon video has ignited a conversation about corporate branding in space. The clip, captured from the Orion capsule as the Artemis II crew watched Earth set behind the lunar horizon, shows the planet’s blue swath slipping beneath a crater‑strewn surface. Reid Wiseman, commander of the mission, recorded the scene on an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the audio captures his awe‑filled whisper,

“No way.”

NASA’s new media policy opens the door

Only months ago the agency relaxed rules, allowing astronauts to bring personal smartphones aboard. Alongside the iPhone, the crew also carried Nikon D5 and Z9 cameras, but the iPhone footage quickly eclipsed the rest, racking up ↑12M views on social platforms. Apple’s logo, though never shown, looms large in the public imagination.

Apple CEO Tim Cook praised the astronaut’s work in a brief post, saying the video “captures the wonders of space and our planet beautifully.” Yet the agency’s branding handbook warns that any commercial use of NASA imagery must not suggest endorsement. Reuters notes that NASA permits editorial use but bars advertising that implies agency support.

Industry observers see a pattern: HP touts its historic Apollo computers, Lockheed Martin runs ads on sites like Bloomberg, and now Apple finds itself walking a thin line between celebration and covert promotion. The debate hinges on whether the iPhone moon video functions as a genuine scientific outreach piece or the “best iPhone ad Apple never made.”
